Far Horizon’s was just outside of town. It was a trailer park, but it was very well kept. It looked like it was a nice place to live if you were on a budget. Which Bruce Kerr obviously was.

His trailer was a double-wide. It had parking for two cars at the front and a little bit of lawn at the side and front.

There were some stairs leading up to the door which had a small deck in front of it.

‘Seems like a nice place,’ I said. The units on this row backed up to the woods, and there were trees in between each unit offering some shade.

‘It is. We don’t get many calls out to here. probably because it’s for over fifty-fives.’

Dani knocked on the front door and a few minutes later it was answered.

I looked around at the car again just to make sure the engine was running so Atticus could stay cool.

Bruce Kerr was in his sixties. Balding. Weasel eyes. He viewed us with suspicion, peering at Dani’s badge like she’d just made it herself before coming here.

‘Thought you were one of them snoopin’ reporters,’ he said, closing the front door behind us. The house smelled of stale tobacco and coffee.

‘You’ve had reporters here already?’ I said.

‘No. From the last time. I thought they were back, but I guess it’s too early. Give them time, though.’

‘I want to ask you a few questions about Angela, Mr Kerr,’ Dani said.

‘Sit down, both of you,’ Kerr said, easing himself into a high-back chair, grimacing as he leaned back.

I moved a few old newspapers so we could sit down.

‘I’m sorry, but we have some bad news,’ Dani said.

‘Angela’s dead. Tell me something I don’t know.’

His words took Dani by surprise for a moment but she quickly caught herself. ‘She is, yes. She was missing for four years and somebody displayed her body in the woods last night.’

‘I told that crowd they were a bunch of no-good sons of bitches.’

‘Who are we talking about?’ I asked.

‘Chief Walker and his department. I told them something funny was going on with Angela all those years ago. Nobody believed me though. Nobody came around and took a statement. Said she was a big girl and that if anything, I was wasting their time.’ Kerr shook his head. ‘My little girl was hurting and nobody took any notice. They said she was an adult and if she wanted to leave and not be found, that was her prerogative. It was only after a week and there was no activity on her bank account did they start to take it seriously.’

‘Was there any activity on her cell phone?’ I asked.

Dani looked at me. ‘We checked the records and it was in the town the night she went missing, then nothing. It stopped pinging, like the battery was out or it had been switched off.’

‘Not to mention her car was still here,’ Kerr said. ‘They even had an answer for that too; if people want to disappear, they leave everything behind and start a new life.
